EUCHEUMA SEAWEED
Since the beginning of time, seaweewd has been consumed as vegetables especially in the Far East, Pacific and Asian Country such as Japan and Korea. In recent years, the seaweed industry has penetrate into Western countries in which the principal use of seaweeds has been as source of phycocolloids ( alginate, carrageenan and agar ), thickening and gelling agents for various industrial applications, including uses in foods. In addition, seaweeds constitute an interesting source of compounds with health protective effects.
Due to the demands for seaweed are ever increasing, and currently positioned in a good market, Fisheries Department and the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) with the collaboration of the Sabah goverment are implementing seaweed culvation projects in large scale.
Why Sabah? The state of Sabah, Malaysia, which is located in the middle of one of the 12 megadiversity sites in the world, has numerous and varied natural resources. Its marine resources, which include coral reefs, fisheries and coastal wetlands are both abundant and diverse as can be expected from being located at the center of the world’s highest marine biodiversity ecosystem and with that it’s sea water is expectionally high with nutrient which is crucial for food seaweed culvation as seaweed draws an extraordinary wealth of mineral elements from the sea that can account for up to 36% of its dry mass.
The genera seaweed majorly cultivated in Sabah is Eucheuma. It is known as Sea Bird Nest and also San Hu Cao in Chinese.
Eucheuma Seaweed is especially good for skin care, vegetarian diet and daily fiber diet intake. Instead of buying expensive bird nest, Eucheuma seaweed is an alternative health food to consume. It is known to have large propotion of iodine and carrageenan, that it is primarily known as source of this nutrient. It grows naturally and contains no artificial fertilizer or chemical. Containing necessary amino acids, non caloric, super low-fat and multi-fibre functions, high soluble fibre which adjust insulin to keep blood sugar’s balance thus preventing from diabetes caused by hyperglycemia. It also eliminates free radical efficiently for detoxify body organs and activate cell tissues for metabolism and anti-aging.
